KARACHI – The Si ndh Cabinet on Saturday gave approval to make a law to ensure protection of ‘witnesses’, besides approving establishment of Child Protection Authority in the province.
The Provincial Cabinet which met with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah in the chair, after a 145 days recess, also formed number of committees to decide austerity steps to cut govt expenditures, revival of magistracy powers for government officers with an aim to control inflation and price hike of food items and other issues.
On the occasion, Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza tabled the proposal to make a law for protection of witnesses’.
Mirza said that witnesses do not come in courts to make statements due to fear and threats to their lives from criminals. However, the Sindh government planned to make a law for witnesses’ protection.
Besides, the cabinet also approved fines on various categories of vehicles for traffic violation. Advisor to CM on Information Sharmila Farooque later briefed the media about the outcome of cabinet meeting. She said that the cabinet has decided to recruit women, as 40 per cent staff of Sindh Bank, besides the bank will focus on financing for agricultural loans for small growers with return of easy installments. Sharmila said that cabinet gave nod for export of surplus wheat. It may be noted that United Nation two days ago had declared the situation of flood affected areas in Sindh worse than hunger stricken countries, but instead of providing food to the IDPs the government approval for wheat export. Later, a six-member cabinet committee was formed to look into the issue and will come up with proposal in the next meeting. The committee will comprise Senior Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, Law Minister Ayaz Soomro and Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza from PPP, Syed Sardar Ahmed, Amir Nawab and Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh from MQM, ANP and PML-F respectively. It was also decided that the meeting of the cabinet will take place on first Tuesday of every month. The cabinet also abolished the exemption of fees of arm licences to elected representatives including MNAs, MPAs, Senators and government officials.
